How to Write Meta Descriptions That Get Clicks

Your meta description is a 155-character sales pitch that appears in Google search results. A well-written meta description can dramatically increase your click-through rate (CTR), bringing more traffic to your site without improving your actual ranking position. Here is how to write meta descriptions that get clicks.

What Is a Meta Description?

A meta description is an HTML attribute that provides a brief summary of a web page. It appears beneath the blue clickable title in search engine results. While Google has stated that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, they significantly influence whether someone clicks on your result or your competitor's.

Think of it this way: your title tag gets people to notice your result, but your meta description convinces them to click. A compelling meta description can be the difference between getting 2% CTR and 8% CTR — that is four times more traffic from the same ranking position.

Meta Description Best Practices

1. Keep It Under 155 Characters

Google typically displays up to 155-160 characters of your meta description on desktop and around 120 characters on mobile. Write your most important information within the first 120 characters to ensure it shows on all devices. If your description is too long, Google will truncate it with an ellipsis (...) which looks incomplete and unprofessional.

2. Include Your Target Keyword

When your meta description contains the keyword someone searched for, Google bolds that keyword in the results. Bold text catches the eye and signals relevance. Place your primary keyword naturally within the first half of the description for maximum visibility.

3. Write a Clear Value Proposition

Tell searchers exactly what they will get by clicking. Will they learn something? Get a free tool? See a comparison? Avoid vague descriptions like "Click here to learn more" — instead, be specific about the value: "Get a free SEO audit with 50+ checks in 60 seconds."

4. Include a Call-to-Action

Action words encourage clicks. Use phrases like "Learn how," "Discover," "Try free," "Get started," or "Find out." A call-to-action gives searchers a reason to click right now rather than scrolling past.

5. Make Each Description Unique

Every page on your site should have a unique meta description. Duplicate descriptions confuse search engines and make your site look spammy in results. Take the time to write a custom description for each important page.

  • Keyword stuffing: Cramming multiple keywords makes the description unreadable and spammy.

  • Leaving them blank: If you do not write one, Google auto-generates one that may not represent your page well.
